Madhya Pradesh ranks 3rd in the tiger population of the country with 308 tigers.

However, recently, tigers were spotted in 1432 forest beats across Madhya Pradesh and this is twice than recorded in 2014. A new national census report is awaited.

  • Bandhavgarh ( 1968 )
  • Pench  ( 1975 )
  • Panna ( 1981 )
  • Satpura ( 1981 )

For wildlife enthusiasts, Madhya Pradesh tops the list of “Tiger Sighting Index”.

Newer wildlife sanctuaries are offering joyful news of presence of significant numbers of Tigers & over a period of time, no wonder, Madhya Pradesh may soar to the top place to see Tigers in India.

We are delighted to share a very recent development too :

An ambush of Tigers were spotted for the first time in Madhya Pradesh’s Kheoni Wildlife Sanctuary.

A tiger, two tigresses and two cubs have been captured for the first time by the night-vision cameras set up in the sanctuary, Dewas Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) PN Mishra said.

The streak of tigers was seen drinking water, he said, adding that vigil had been tightened across the sanctuary.

“The cubs are around one-and-half years old ( sub adult ). They have been spotted in the past too.

But this is the first time that all the five tigers were seen together , indicating that they are resident wild cats.

Located quite near to Indore in Dewas district, Kheoni Wildlife Sanctuary is around 125 kms from Indore and has been showing a significant growing population of Leopards, the rare honeybadger and now, Tigers.

Kheoni Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1955, is situated in Dewas District, Madhya Pradesh. Spread over an area of 122.7 sq km, it is basically a dry deciduous forest, primary flora being teak and bamboo species, and is a home to a wide variety of fauna. Major animal species found here include chital, sambar, blue bull, four-horned antelope, wild boar and barking deer.

The sanctuary is also rich in birdlife, specially in winters. The Sanctuary also has a number of tourists’ spots for visitors. For taking the bath in the ‘Bal-Ganga’ which flows in the forest village Kheoni, people come here 3-4 times every year. There is also an ancient Shiv temple in the village in which the ancient idols of the god and goddess have been found.

As of now, the only accommodation available is the Forest Rest House of Kheoni.

As per the ENVIS (Environment Information System) Madhya Pradesh website, the primary fauna found in Kheoni Sanctuary are cheetal, sambhar, blue bull, four-horned antelope, wild boar, barking deer, wolf etc.

The wildlife century contains six large meadows and is a perfect breeding ground for herbivorous animals like cheetals and barking deer. Forest officials had made elaborate arrangements to create water holes in the sanctuary at strategic locations. Solar pumps were installed to fill the water holes on a regular basis during the summer season. With food and water in abundance the Tigers have thrived in the scorching hostile summer season.

The Dewas forest division had recently prepared an action plan on Tiger Conservation for accredition under Conservation Assured Tiger Standards (CATS) site which was assessed for compliance by a team of three experts.

Under the CATS, a tiger conservation area is encouraged to meet a set of standards and criteria created by an international group of experts and protected area managers for effective and long-term tiger conservation. Forest department had been making a efforts since quiet a long time to sustain the tiger population in  wildlife century. The department is also planning to train the inhouse staff on Tiger management with expertise from the Satpura National Park. Encouraged by the recent sightings of tigers, the forest department plans to hold meetings of the local tiger council involving the Dewas district administration and police to chalk out plans to conserve the Wildcats.

Statement of PCCF Wildlife, Madhya Pradesh

With reference to a recent report on the alleged mistreatment of elephants in Bandhavgarh National Park, many of our guests have reverted to us to have a ground report and check on the facts.

This is our version.

At no point, we intend to challenge the intention of the photographer. The objective here is to showcase the reality.

As one enters the Tala zone in Bandhavgarh National Park for the safari, on the right side is an enclosure where elephants are kept. The person who saw and photographed had no idea of the background and as we would say impressions can be deceiving, the person drew an opinion and unfortunately were not even enlightened by the accompanying guide.

Since the last one year, Bandhavgarh National Park is invaded by a big herd of wild elephants. Now, we all know that Madhya Pradesh is not a primary habitat of elephants and these pachyderms have ventured from the state of Chattisgarh and reached Bandhavgarh National Park via Sidhi.

Initially, the forest department attempted to stop this journey at Sidhi & return them back, succeed initially but over a period of time, the elephants entered the forests of Bandhavgarh National Park. This particular elephant was tranquilized and captured from an area where he had trampled and killed four villagers who were the sole bread earners of the family. The revengeful villagers were persuaded not to act and the elephant was captured alive by the forest department.

There are certain guidelines by the government where any animal, if has killed humans, should not be released in the wild and has to spend his life in a protected area. Adhering to this, the elephant was brought to Bandhavgarh National Park and is being trained to be of immense use in saving the forests in which he has lived.

Elephant patrolling through the dense Indian rainforest jungles is essential for conservation and in the fight against poachers.

No training is easy, be it humans or animals. Any such training can be heart wrenching but one thing which is wrong in that statement is that the elephant is being trained for tourism. In the National Parks of Madhya Pradesh, the primary responsibility of a trained elephant is patrolling in the deep forest where it is not possible to go by foot. The forests of Madhya Pradesh are basically moist deciduous, extremely dense in nature and cannot be patrolled only by vehicles or food. Elephants can venture into the deep forest safely where it is practically impossible to reach by a vehicle or by foot. Because of these trained elephants, the forest department can patrol inaccessible areas which is a huge deterrent for poachers. India is a country of 1.3 billion people, with 467 people living per km²,compared this to China which is just 145, USA is 35 and Russia is only 24.The cattle population in India is about 225 per km² .

This cumulates to an immense pressure on the forests in India, and still the Forest Department has managed to save it’s rich natural heritage. India still has the largest mammal on planet which is not endangered, still have Tigers which are the largest predators on earth, the numbers steadily growing  and uncounted Leopards, Snow Leopards & a healthy Rhino population. And all this is due to the hard work of the Forest Department, acceptability by the local community and adaptability of the wildlife. India’s wildlife numbers are growing. India is home to over 200 endangered species, no big mammal has been lost in last 50 years, unlike other countries where forests and wildlife has got decimated.

Apologies if this seems emotional, but someone comes and sees something and without understanding the truth starts to spread news is not fair. Our Forest department has taken very serious note of this & the highest authority ( PCCF Wildlife, Government of  Madhya Pradesh ) has made a statement too ( attached ).. One cannot see one incident in isolation, one has to see the bigger picture.

As a company, we do not promote elephant rides & we condemn acts like elephant rides in Amer Fort ( Rajasthan, India ) on hard stones ferrying tourists.

Madhya Pradesh can be said to be the microcosm of India, for the land reflects the glory of India in many ways. These can relate to the architectural grandeur of its palaces, temples and mosques, the natural beauty surrounding the Vindhyas and other regions, the prehistoric art at places like Bhimbetka, the pilgrimage centres of Amarkantak, Chitrakoot and others, and the adventure trail of the tiger sanctuaries to name a few. For those with a spiritual bent of mind and in the quest for peace and tranquillity, the land of Sanchi can be an added attraction in the Madhya Pradesh tourism circuit.

How to reach?

The religion of Buddhism started by Lord Buddha had led a trail in India with many centres reflecting the glory of the Lord and his teachings. The town of Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh is one such centre that is well connected by road, railroad and air. If one takes the road then Sanchi can be reached easily from important cities like Bhopal, Indore or Ujjain by buses or cars. The nearest railway station and airport happen to be in the capital city of Bhopal, about 50 kilometres from Sanchi. Located in the Raisen district of the state, the quaint town with an old world charm is known for its beautiful stupas, monuments, and monasteries.

A bit of history

The main attraction of the town is the Buddhist Stupa or a hemispherical dome housing the relics of Lord Buddha. The Stupa was built by Emperor Ashoka, the monarch who reigned during the period from 268 BC to 232 BC. One of the greatest monarchs the world has ever known, Emperor Ashoka had embraced Buddhism and decided to propagate the teachings of the lord after witnessing the wanton destruction wrought by the Kalinga war. As a part of that exercise he had set up many Buddhist monasteries, stupas and pilgrimage centres all across the country, and through his emissaries, even beyond the boundaries of India as well.

The beauty of the Great Stupa at Sanchi

Declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the construction of the Stupa began in the third century BC. The 51 ft high Stupa (mound) or the hemispherical dome consists of a central chamber that contains the relics of Lord Buddha. The archaeological wonder is said to be the oldest stone structure in India built during the Mauryan era. The Stupa is surrounded by four ornately carved gateways or Toranas facing the four directions with each of them representing the eternal and subliminal qualities of love, trust, courage and peace.

The present Stupa is double the size of the original one built by Emperor Ashoka. The expansion of the Stupa was carried out during the Shunga dynasty lorded over by the General of the Mauryan Empire. It was during this period, a chatra or an umbrella measuring 37 meters in diameter and 16 meters tall was erected over the dome.

Other attractions

Interestingly, near the Sanchi Stupa is another important tourist attraction, the Udayagiri Caves.

The magnificence of Udayagiri Caves

These caves consist of an assemblage of twenty rock-cut caves near the ancient town of Vidisha, from the early years of the 5th century CE. These contain some of the oldest surviving Hindu temples and iconography in India. As one of India’s most important archaeological sites, the Udayagiri hills and its caves are protected monuments managed by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Udayagiri caves are notable for the ancient monumental relief sculpture of Vishnu in his incarnation as the man-boar Varaha, rescuing the earth symbolically represented by Bhudevi clinging to the boar’s tusk as described in Hindu mythology ( Cave No 5 ).

Besides the great Stupa and the magnificence of Udayagiri caves, Sanchi has other places of interest as well such as the famous Ashoka Pillar, a number of Viharas (places where Buddhist monks used to stay,) Gupta Temple and others.
